Kereru House

Ruby Bay, Mapua & the lights of Nelson provide the stunning backdrop for Kereru House at “The Bluffs” – located conveniently between Nelson & Abel Tasman National Park. This superb self catering clifftop house features fabulous views, with Mount Arthur and NW Nelson ranges on one side and an uninterrupted view of D’Urville Island and Tasman Bay on the other. Ideally situated between the Richmond and Motueka townships, Kereru House is only seven minutes drive from Mapua with its restaurants and shops and 45 minutes drive from Nelson city. Very close to the Great Taste Cycle Trail.

The fabulous garden setting is home to NZ Kereru, Tui and other native birds which are encouraged to visit with bird feeders and selective garden plantings. The views over the sea from the secluded outdoor barbeque are absolutely stunning. Add the various balconies around Kereru House and you have the ultimate in relaxation and comfort. No matter what the weather, there is always somewhere to sit and look at the view.

Totally private and self contained, the House includes a fully equipped kitchen, featuring all modern appliances and gas hob cooking. Quality linen is supplied and there are two bathrooms and a laundry. The house includes an office with free wireless internet and telephone land line with free local calls.

Warm and hospitable comfort overlooking Tasman Bay….

This delightful self-contained house sits about 30 meters back from a beautiful and sweeping cliffside view of Tasman Bay about 100 feet below. On the backside is a working farm mostly orchards and a few cows with lots of birdlife and on the front side (30 meters in front of the house – it’s not really perched on a cliff, thank goodness) you can even spot rays in the shallow bay below. The location is great – just down the road from Mapua with its dockside shops and restaurants and about 30 minutes south of Kaiteriteri which is a (crowded) entry point to Abel Tasman park. On the way are lots of roadside places to buy fresh cherries and peaches and boysenberries – heaven in Dec/Jan! The house is meticulously maintained with lots of care – we were greeted by a big bouquet of fresh cut flowers from the garden, a welcoming note to pick our own citrus from the orchard, and a fridge with breakfast makings. The house has an open and airy feel with lots of homey touches. No problem with the wireless even though way out in the country and lots of devices attached, there’s even local telephone for making restaurant inquiries. There are two bedrooms but we had need of a couple of extra beds (the 4 of us had the unexpected opportunity to meet up with a niece and friend also in NZ) and hosts Mary and Murray happily accommodated with extra linens and a spare bed from their house put into the upstairs sewing room. Two full baths made it easy for the 6 of us, and cooking was easy as well – a very well-appointed kitchen, and even a laundry. This place is a gem. Highly recommended!

Very private location with stunning sea views….

The property was as we had expected in a secluded location with views from several balconies out to sea. The house is well maintained and very clean, the added bonus being the weekly service which includes cleaning and change of linen. There is a good selection of cooking utensils and crockery though a hand mixer may be useful for longer stays if guests do much cooking. The garden is also well maintained and a vegetable patch offered fresh produce. The hosts are extremely welcoming providing a wealth of local information, fresh flowers on arrival not forgetting home baking, and some welcome basics in the fridge. A thoroughly relaxing venue but close to the Abel Tasman Park and shopping facilities as required. For those seeking a base to enjoy just living in New Zealand this is an ideal choice.

Mary:  I have since purchased a hand mixer as suggested.

Peak experience in many ways….

The house is roomy, very clean and comfortable. Kitchen is very well equipped. Mary was most gracious as a host and navigator to local restaurants and sights. Used veggies from the garden for dinner, sitting out on the back deck while a couple of fantails kept us company. One evening, sitting on the upper “breakfast room” deck and enjoying the bay view, we were greeted by a Lady Amherst pheasant prancing just before us. Plums and clementines from the orchard, a comfortable, quiet bed. Very private and relaxing, but convenient to Mapua and some very good restaurants. Five stars awarded.

Amazing Relaxing Stay….

The Clifftop Orchard is just as described and as good as the reviews reveal. The house is very clean and has everything you could possible need for cooking and having a relaxing stay. Its central to all that the Nelson Area has to offer and Mary and Murray are very helpful in acclimating you to all the sights and activities around. The orchard and cows were a big bonus and that view was unbelievable. Beautiful gardens and lovely little places to sit and enjoy the quiet. Wish we could have stayed longer.
