Mapua Store (7 minutes drive) is a mini supermarket selling a wide range of food and grocery items including liquor.

Mapua Country Store (6 mins drive at the turnoff to Mapua) sells local fruit and vegetables and some deli items.

 

For an easy stay in meal, we recommend you grab some smoked fish from The Smokehouse at Mapua Wharf, salad items from Mapua 4Square Discounter or Mapua Country Store and fresh bread from the Mapua 4Square Discounter or Naked Bun.  If you are here in summer, there might be tomatoes, lettuce & salad items in our vegetable garden. Assemble your meal at Kereru House, take a glass of wine and sit out on a balcony and drink in the view.

Things to Do

Art & culture.  The Nelson Bays area (Nelson, Ruby Coast, Motueka, Golden Bay) is well known for its art and culture attractions. www.nelsonnz.com www.thesuter.org.nz

Beaches, coastline and easy walks. Everyone who comes to Nelson heads for the world famous Abel Tasman National Park. Visit the beaches or take a cruise and hop on and off for short walks in the beautiful bush of the national park. www.abeltasman.co.nz.

Great Taste Cycle Trail.  Tasman’s Great Taste Trail starts at the Nelson Airport or the Nelson i-SITE and offers panoramic coastal and mountain views over Tasman Bay, Waimea Estuary and the Western Ranges, with many stops for fine food and relaxation. Tramping, skiing and other outdoor activities. Check out the Kahurangi National Park. A network of tracks, fishing, kayaking and caving are some of the Park’s attractions. Mountainbiking is now allowed on three of these tracks. Everything from short nature walks to longer alpine tramps, skiing in the winter. Golf. There are three excellent golf courses nearby. Nelson city’s famous Saturday market www.nelsonmarket.co.nz (8am – 1pm) attracts visitors from all over NZ and boasts over 80 different food, clothing and craft stalls.   For the best experience, we recommend going early (before 10am) then have coffee and spend the rest of the morning wandering around Nelson – shopping or visiting some of the historic places.

 

Our Recommendations

For morning/afternoon teas or lunch, we recommend Jester House. Two minutes drive, 15 minute cycle or 30 minute walk down Aporo Rd towards Motueka.

Day activities. We suggest the following options for day activites:

Easy post travel day around Mapua. Particularly if you are tired after travelling. Drive down to Mapua, have lunch, visit the shops and buy in some provisions. In the afternoon after a rest, you could walk (30mins) or drive down to Ruby Bay (5mins) and walk on the beach. Alternatively, take a leisurely walk around our property and check out the highland cattle.

Abel Tasman National Park. Wilsons Abel Tasman cruises. Cruises leave from 9am. Their bus from nelson will stop over the road from our property.       Either stay on the boat the whole time or hop on and off for short walks in the National Park. Alternatively, pack a picnic lunch, drive to Marahau (30-40 minutes) and take an easy walk into one of the beaches of the national park.

Saturday market/Nelson City.   Attend the market, do some shopping then have a leisurely lunch, then visit the Nelson Wearable Art and Classic Car museum in the afternoon. www.nelsonmarket.co.nz

Golden Bay. Even driving over “Marble Mountain” to Takaka is an iconic Nelson trip. However, activites we recommend on your day out “in the bay” include:

Visit Waikorupupu Springs An easy 5 minute walk from the car park

Continue on towards Collingwood and have lunch at Golden Bay’s iconic Mussel Inn www.musselinn.co.nz or go back to Takaka and lunch at the bay’s other iconic cafe, Whole Meal Cafe in the main street. www.wholemealcafe.co.nz . Do some shopping in Takaka then:

Stop off at Anatoki just south of Takaka and catch a salmon. Get it smoked on site, pick up some bread and salad items from Motueka and travel back to Kereru House to sit on a balcony enjoying the view while you feast! www.anatokisalmon.co.nz
